Yemaya

Yemaya

For the month of January I was going to work with Hekate, but instead I chose Yemaya. Through my research I found that Yemaya is an African Goddess. A Mother Goddess, the Goddess of home, love, fertility and family.

She is also known as Goddess of the Ocean and the New Year. This is why I chose her...not only for the new year aspect but also because she is a Mother Goddess and as I found out I am pregnant with my fourth child, I really needed some guidance. I felt very lost, scared and hopeful in January. First trimester hormones hit me bad and I was in a very low place. Many, many things change when you become pregnant whether it is with your first or in my case my fourth. Emotionally, physically and mentally. The darkness of the winter hit me and my light was not shining as strong as I knew it could. But with the help of Yemaya and the goddess I chose to work with for February I have been pulling through and burning brighter.

The story of Yemaya is that she also helped guide the people in the holds of the slaves ships as they were taken far from their homeland of Africa. This journey made her a Goddess of the Ocean, whereas before she was known as Goddess of the River Yoruba.

She is celebrated under many names today that aren't quite as old as her name Yemaya including the virgin Mary, Stella Maris and Our lady of Regla.

As Yemaya is the Goddess of the Ocean she reminds us that even in the darkest of times we can learn to navigate the ebbs and flows of the waves in our lives with wisdom, courage and grace.
