Here is some information that I have gathered and thought to share with you all. Take it and use it as you will. If you have anything to add please feel free to share!
There are two types of Familiars. Ones that exist in the earth realm and ones that exist in the spiritual realm.
The ones in the earth realm can come in many forms. They can be pets or an animal that calls to you. You can tell which one has potential. There is a certain feeling that you get from them. A special connection. Familiars assist in spellcraft, herbalism and psychic ability. They sometimes provide 'energy' to a witch whether for healing, providing insight or simply being a wonderful, loving companion...it truly depends on the Witch, the Familiar and the Witch's path.
Familiars of the spiritual realm are Astral Familiars. They are spirits that attach themselves and often guide and assist a Witch with her workings. In some paths a Familiar is the shape a Witch may take as they travel the astral plane.
"The oldest concept of the Witch's Familiar was an animal spirit of Nature, the group consciousness of a specific type of animal delaminated into a single form. In some cultures this is called a power animal or animal guide. Some Witches used a pet animal as the doorway or link to this type of connection to the higher animal spirit. In such cases the astral form of the animal became the vehicle for working with the greater consciousness, although certainly few peasant Witches from the medieval period would have been able to convey the concept in such terms.
Many of the animals associated with various deities, such as Diana and the Hound, Hecate and the Toad, Proserpina and the Raven, Pan and the Goat, are also animals that appear as Witches' Familiars."

Here is a beautiful spell for attracting your familiar. You can also use this spell for cementing your psychic bonds between you and your pet that you feel you have a special connection with.
I did this myself with my cat Raven. I always knew with him that we are connected. I always have felt that he has been reincarnated into a cat and was once a human...may sound a little wonky for some, but he has this way about him...
Familiar Spell
~Get your circle ready, but don't cast it and you don't need any tools for this. Just a simple circle with your pentacle in the centre. You can have some candles for the points. Outline your circle with frankincense and make sure it is large enough that your familiar will be comfortable to enter and hang out.
~ Sit within the circle. Don't force your familiar but let them come to you, this is important. The choice must be theirs.
~ Once they have come into your circle. Welcome them by petting them or by giving them a gift.
~ Once they have settled. Cast your circle
~ Sit and meditate with your Familiar. Connect. When you are ready to come out. Open your circle and do so.
For example,
When I did my spell I had some candles in the centre of my circle with my pentacle. I had them set on top of a stool. I set out my directions and walk the edge of my circle with frankincense. I sat near the centre of my circle and eventually Raven who had been watching from outside the circle, came to sit underneath the altar area of my circle. He laid down and let me pet him. I then cast my circle. We sat like this for awhile. I meditated and he hung out. It was simply beautiful.
There is so much that you yourself can do with this spell. Have fun with it! Twist it to your own or keep it the same. Whatever calls to you.
