Lughnasa

The first of the three harvest festivals! Lughnasa is a time to reap what we have sown over the past few months. The days are getting shorter, the nights longer. In our family Lughnasa is a time when we begin our canning. I usually start off with jams as the fruits are ready to be picked at this time. This years jam list is strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and rhubarb! We also do alot of baking in our family but this year I decided to switch it up a bit with my recipe for bread and taught myself how to braid it and added more seeds to it. Check out the link for the recipe: braided bread

I also experimented with an Apple Cider recipe. Check out the link for info on that ;)

The Goddess at this time is the Mother of the Harvest. Perhaps you could do some research on a goddess that you would like to honour at your altar at this time. Check out my post for the making of a Lughnasa Harvest Doll and also my post of Demeter.

The God at this time is Lugh-- the many skilled. The god of all arts and skills of human culture. This is the time of the season that Lugh is half way to the Otherworld. When the nights are getting longer and the days shorter. He is in the realm where ideas are born, where dreams and inspiration can be brought to the light. Lugh is also a Sun God.

For Altar ideas check out my Lughnasa Altar post and for more crafting ideas for Lughnasa check out my Kitchen Spoons page.

Colors for Lughnasa are gold, brown, orange and green.
Some good Incense at this time would be: sandalwood, heather, clover, rosemary, chamomile
Foods to celebrate with: nuts, crabapples, bread, cider, grains, berries, vegetables
Decorate your dwelling with: Cornucopia, sheaves of grain, corn dolls
