Ostara

Ostara/Spring Equinox

I am so excited! This is one of my fav. times of the year...when the seasons change. We are doing many projects this year to welcome in Spring and as my kids grow older it becomes more and more important to explain to them the whys, the stories. I need to give them some sort of base that they can use for their own beliefs. Honouring Mother Earth and our Sun makes so much sense to us and to me it feels like coming home.

Ostara is named for the Germanic Goddess of fertility and spring. Who was also said to have been able to take the form of a rabbit/hare.  Hares have babies in the spring and have come to represent fertility and abundance and they are associated with magic, spring and the moon. Ostara has many symbols of rebirth and growth with eggs, baby animals and seeds.

This Sabbat is celebrated on the Spring Equinox when the time between light and dark are balanced. There is also a balance at this time between life and death. Birth is a time when the gates between the worlds are open. The seeds that are buried in the ground return as new plants. The Dead return from the Underworld as new beings and the earth is reborn and the days grow longer.

Another Goddess associated with Ostara is Persephone. I love the story of Persephone and her journey into the Underworld. She is the daughter of the Greek Goddess Demeter. To read the story of Peresphone click on this link: Persephone
